- Total: 6 days when pregnancy is possible
Conception Probability by Day:
5 days before ovulation: 10% chance
4 days before ovulation: 16% chance
3 days before ovulation: 14% chance
2 days before ovulation: 27% chance
1 day before ovulation: 31% chance (HIGHEST)
Ovulation day: 33% chance (HIGHEST)
1 day after ovulation: 10% chance
Best Timing:
- Optimal: 1-2 days before ovulation
- Good: Ovulation day and 2-3 days before
- Possible: 3-5 days before ovulation

Understanding Cycle Length
Typical Cycle Patterns:
| Cycle Length | Ovulation Day | Fertile Window Starts |
|---|---|---|
| 21 days | Day 7 | Day 2 |
| 24 days | Day 10 | Day 5 |
| 26 days | Day 12 | Day 7 |
| 28 days | Day 14 | Day 9 |
| 30 days | Day 16 | Day 11 |
| 32 days | Day 18 | Day 13 |
| 35 days | Day 21 | Day 16 |
Important: The luteal phase (after ovulation) is relatively constant at 14 days. The variation in cycle length comes from the follicular phase (before ovulation).
Ovulation Signs and Symptoms
Physical Signs of Ovulation
Primary Fertility Signs:
1. Basal Body Temperature (BBT) Shift:
- Temperature drops slightly before ovulation
- Rises 0.4-1.0°F (0.2-0.5°C) after ovulation
- Stays elevated until next period
- Must measure first thing in morning
- Requires consistent tracking
2. Cervical Mucus Changes:
- Before ovulation: Scant, sticky, creamy
- During fertile window: Clear, stretchy, slippery
- Ovulation: Resembles raw egg whites
- After ovulation: Becomes thick and sticky again
- Facilitates sperm survival and transport
3. Cervical Position:
- Low, firm, closed (infertile)
- High, soft, open (fertile)
- Changes can be felt internally
- Takes practice to recognize
Secondary Fertility Signs:
4. Mittelschmerz (Ovulation Pain):
- One-sided lower abdominal pain
- Lasts few hours to 2 days
- Occurs around ovulation
- Not all women experience this
- Can alternate sides each cycle
5. Breast Tenderness:
- Increased sensitivity
- Usually after ovulation
- Caused by progesterone rise
- Common in luteal phase
6. Increased Libido:
- Nature's way of encouraging conception
- Peak around ovulation
- Hormone-driven response

Calculating Ovulation
The Formula
Standard Ovulation Calculation:
Ovulation Date = First Day of Last Period + (Cycle Length - 14)
Example:
Cycle Length: 28 days
First Day of Last Period: January 1
Ovulation = January 1 + (28 - 14)
Ovulation = January 1 + 14 days
Ovulation = January 15
Fertile Window = January 10 - January 15
Best Days = January 13-14
With Custom Luteal Phase:
Ovulation Date = First Day of Last Period + (Cycle Length - Luteal Phase)
Example:
Cycle Length: 30 days
Luteal Phase: 12 days
First Day: January 1
Ovulation = January 1 + (30 - 12)
Ovulation = January 19
Fertile Window = January 14 - January 19
Fertile Window Calculation
The 6-Day Fertile Window:
Fertile Window Start = Ovulation Date - 5 days
Fertile Window End = Ovulation Date + 1 day
Example for 28-day cycle:
Ovulation = Day 14
Fertile Window = Day 9 to Day 15
High Fertility Days:
- Days 9-14: High fertility
- Days 13-14: Peak fertility (best conception chance)
- Day 15: Medium fertility (ovulation day + 1)

How do I calculate my ovulation date?
Calculate your ovulation date by counting back 14 days from when your next period is expected to start. For a 28-day cycle, ovulation occurs around day 14. For a 30-day cycle, ovulation is around day 16. Use our ovulation calculator by entering your last period date and cycle length for personalized results.
What are the most fertile days?
Your most fertile days are the 5 days leading up to ovulation plus ovulation day itself, creating a 6-day fertile window. The highest chance of conception occurs 1-2 days before ovulation and on ovulation day. Our calculator identifies your specific fertile window based on your cycle.
When do I ovulate in my cycle?
Ovulation typically occurs 14 days before your next period starts. For a standard 28-day cycle, this is day 14. For a 35-day cycle, ovulation occurs around day 21. The key is that the luteal phase (after ovulation) is consistently about 14 days for most women.
How accurate is this ovulation calculator?
Our ovulation calculator is approximately 80% accurate for women with regular cycles (21-35 days). For irregular cycles, accuracy decreases to 50-70%. The calculator provides estimates based on standard cycle patterns. For maximum accuracy, combine with ovulation predictor kits, basal body temperature tracking, or consult a healthcare provider.
How do I know if I'm ovulating?
Signs of ovulation include clear, stretchy cervical mucus (like egg whites), a slight rise in basal body temperature, mild pelvic pain on one side (Mittelschmerz), increased libido, and breast tenderness. Ovulation predictor kits can detect the LH surge that occurs 24-36 hours before ovulation.
How many days after my period do I ovulate?
For a 28-day cycle, you ovulate approximately 14 days after your period starts. For longer cycles, subtract 14 from your cycle length (e.g., 30-day cycle = ovulate around day 16). For shorter cycles, ovulation occurs earlier (e.g., 24-day cycle = ovulate around day 10).
What is the fertile window?
The fertile window is the 6-day period when pregnancy is possible: 5 days before ovulation (when sperm can survive in cervical mucus) plus ovulation day (when the egg is viable). This window represents the best time for conception when trying to get pregnant.
Can I get pregnant right after my period?
It's possible but unlikely for most women. Sperm can survive up to 5 days, so if you have a short cycle and ovulate early (day 7-10), intercourse right after your period could result in pregnancy. Women with longer cycles are less likely to conceive from sex immediately after their period.
How long does ovulation last?
Ovulation itself lasts 12-24 hours - this is when the egg is released and viable for fertilization. However, the fertile window lasts 6 days due to sperm survival. Once released, the egg must be fertilized within 12-24 hours or it dissolves.
Can I ovulate without having a period?
Yes, you can ovulate without having a recent period, especially postpartum while breastfeeding or after stopping birth control. The first ovulation occurs before the first period, which is why it's possible to conceive before your period returns.
Can you have a period without ovulating?
Yes, this is called an anovulatory cycle. You may experience bleeding that seems like a period, but no egg was released. This is common during puberty, perimenopause, with PCOS, during times of high stress, or with certain medical conditions.
Is this ovulation calculator free?
Yes, our ovulation calculator is completely free with unlimited calculations. No registration or payment required. Track your cycles and plan for conception as often as needed at no cost.
What if my cycles are irregular?
For irregular cycles (varying by more than 7-9 days), our calculator provides estimates but accuracy decreases. Track your cycles for 3-6 months to find your average, use ovulation predictor kits to detect ovulation, and consult a healthcare provider if trying to conceive.
When should I see a doctor about fertility?
See a doctor if you're under 35 and trying for 12 months without success, age 35-39 and trying for 6 months, or age 40+ and trying to conceive. Seek help sooner for irregular cycles, painful periods, known fertility issues, or if you have concerns about your reproductive health.
