Marathon Pacing Strategy
Start Conservatively
The most common mistake runners make is starting too fast. Your first mile should feel easy. Adrenaline will make you want to run faster—resist the urge.
Maintain Even Splits
Try to keep each mile within 5-10 seconds of your goal pace. Small variations add up over 26.2 miles.
The Wall
Miles 18-22 are notoriously difficult. This is when glycogen stores deplete. Being slightly ahead of pace before this point can help.
Final Push
The last 4-5 miles are tough but also where you can make up time if you've conserved energy.
VDOT Explained
VDOT (VO2 in running terms) is a measure of your running ability based on performance. It was developed by Jack Daniels and represents your VO2 max equivalent.
