Panel Load Calculator
Electrical Panel Load Calculation
Standard Calculation Method (NEC)
The standard method for calculating residential service load includes:
- General Lighting: 3 VA per square foot of living space
- Small Appliance Circuits: 1,500 VA each (minimum 2)
- Laundry Circuit: 1,500 VA
- Appliances: Nameplate ratings
- Motor Loads: 25% of largest motor
Load Centers
Common residential panel sizes:
- 100A - Small homes, apartments
- 150A - Medium homes, all-electric small homes
- 200A - Standard for most new homes
- 400A - Large homes, estates, with many electrical appliances
80% Rule
For continuous loads (3+ hours), the NEC requires the load not exceed 80% of the breaker or panel rating. This prevents overheating and ensures safe operation.
About Panel Load Calculator
Panel Load Calculator - Calculate Electrical Panel Capacity
Calculate electrical panel load and capacity instantly. Determine if your panel has adequate capacity for all circuits with NEC compliance checking.
How to Calculate Panel Load
- List all circuit breakers with their amperage and voltage
- Multiply amps × voltage for each circuit (use 125% for continuous loads)
- Sum all circuit VA values to get total panel load
- Divide by panel voltage to get total amperage
- Compare to main breaker rating (should be <= 80% for continuous loads)
Panel Load Calculation Formula
Total VA = Sum of (Circuit Amps × Circuit Voltage × 1.25 if continuous)
Total Amperage = Total VA / Panel Voltage
Load % = (Total Amperage / Main Breaker Rating) × 100
Standard Panel Sizes
| Panel Size | Capacity (at 240V) | 80% Limit (Continuous) | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100A | 24,000 VA | 19,200 VA | Small homes, apartments, additions |
| 150A | 36,000 VA | 28,800 VA | Medium homes, small all-electric |
| 200A | 48,000 VA | 38,400 VA | Standard new homes, most renovations |
| 300A | 72,000 VA | 57,600 VA | Large homes, with significant electric demand |
| 400A | 96,000 VA | 76,800 VA | Estate homes, commercial residential |
