About This Calculator

Fraction to Decimal Calculator

Convert any fraction to its decimal equivalent with our free online calculator. Handle proper fractions, improper fractions, mixed numbers, and detect repeating decimals automatically.

How to Convert Fraction to Decimal

Step 1: Divide the numerator by the denominator

Step 2: The result is the decimal equivalent

Example: Convert 3/4 to Decimal

3 ÷ 4 = 0.75
Result: 0.75

Example: Convert 1/3 to Decimal

1 ÷ 3 = 0.333...
Result: 0.333... (repeating)

Types of Decimals

Terminating Decimals

Decimals that end. The denominator has only factors of 2 and 5.

Examples: 1/2 = 0.5, 3/4 = 0.75, 1/8 = 0.125

Repeating Decimals

Decimals with a pattern that continues forever. Denominator has factors other than 2 and 5.

Examples: 1/3 = 0.333..., 2/3 = 0.667..., 1/7 = 0.142857...

Mixed Numbers to Decimals

Convert mixed numbers by first converting to improper fraction or by separating.

Example: 2 1/2 to Decimal

Method 1: 2 + (1 ÷ 2) = 2 + 0.5 = 2.5
Method 2: (2 × 2 + 1) / 2 = 5/2 = 2.5

Long Division Method

For fractions that don't convert easily:

  1. Set up division: numerator ÷ denominator
  2. Add decimal point and zeros to numerator
  3. Divide normally
  4. Watch for repeating patterns

Example: 5/6

5 ÷ 6 = 0.8333...
6 goes into 50: 8 times (48), remainder 2
6 goes into 20: 3 times (18), remainder 2
Pattern continues: 0.8333...
