Concrete Slab

Pronunciation: /'kankrit slaeb/

Definition

A concrete slab is a flat, horizontal structural element made of reinforced concrete, used as a floor or foundation in buildings. Slabs provide a solid surface for living spaces, garages, patios, and driveways. They can be placed on-grade (on the ground) or elevated between building levels.

Formula

Slab Volume = Length x Width x Thickness

Concrete is measured in cubic yards or cubic meters. For a 24x24 foot slab that is 4 inches thick: 24 x 24 x 0.33 = 190 cubic feet, which equals approximately 7 cubic yards of concrete.

Example

Garage Slab Example

A typical 2-car garage slab might be 24 feet wide by 24 feet long by 4 inches thick. This requires about 7 cubic yards of concrete. A driveway slab is typically 4-6 inches thick for passenger vehicles, while heavy-duty slabs for RVs or workshops may be 6-8 inches thick.
